Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT)

CBCT(Cone Beam Computed Tomography) is the latest medical imaging platform available today. It has revolutionized the field of diagnostics and treatment. The patient receives a fraction of the radiation compared to conventional CT scans. CBCT is of specific importance to the field of dentistry. Its applications range from simple to profound. They include presurgical assessment and treatment planning for craniofacial abnormalities.

Treatment planning required for fixed orthodontics is also made possible by the CBCT. It is also very helpful for treatment planning required for cleft palate surgery. CBCT is of particular importance in the field of dental implants. The 3-D images generated by this system construct an image of the bony foundation of the jaws. Perfect placement of implants within bone becomes the norm when utilizing this system.

The CBCT scanner rotates around the patient’s head during dental/orthodontic imaging, taking up to approximately 600 distinct images. In interventional radiology, the patient is offset from the table such that the area of interest is oriented in the cone beam’s field of view. A volumetric data set is obtained by performing a single 200-degree rotation over the area of interest. The scanning program captures and reconstructs the data, resulting in what is known as a digital volume, which is made up of three-dimensional voxels of anatomical data that can then be manipulated and visualized using specialized software.

First Cone Beam CT Scan in Chennai

Balaji Dental and Craniofacial Hospital is a world-class superspecialty hospital in Chennai. We deal with dental and craniomaxillofacial corrective treatments. We have the distinction of acquiring south India’s very first CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) unit. The then Tripura governor, Hon’ble Shri D. Y. Patil did the inauguration on Gandhi Jayanthi day in 2010. Prof. George Sandor, Head of Oral Surgery at the University of Toronto was also present. He delivered the keynote oration at the function.

Media too were present in strength to report this event. This remarkable technology will be a boon to the general public in many ways. The bar has been set higher for diagnosis and treatment planning in Chennai after this.
