Dr SM Balaji plays host to the Minister of Health, Republic of Seychelles

His Excellency, Hon’ble Jean-Paul Adam, Minister of Health, Republic of Seychelles, visited Balaji Dental and Craniofacial Hospital recently while on a visit to Chennai. The hospital is a super specialty referral center for patients from the Republic of Seychelles with craniofacial anomalies. Patients from the island nation have been successfully rehabilitated at the hospital for the last 25 years.

The minister was accompanied by Dr Loren Reginald, Special Advisor, Dr Danny Louange, CEO, Health Care Agency, Dr Kenneth Henriette, Director of Hospital Services, Dr Javier Rose, Consultant Pediatrician, Mr Marthy Vidot, Personal Assistant to Minister and Mr M Seshasai, Honorary Consul, Consulate of the Republic of Seychelles.

Guided tour of the hospital for the minister

Dr SM Balaji conducted a guided tour of the hospital premises for the distinguished guests. They were accompanied by Dr Preetha Balaji, Consultant, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dr Varsha Balaji, Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr SM Balaji explained the salient features of the hospital.

He showed them around the dental clinic, laboratory facilities, Pediatric ICU, inpatient wards and state of art operation theaters. Medical as well as paramedical staff at the hospital were introduced to the minister. He also met and spoke with some of the patients undergoing treatment at the hospital.

The minister expressed his appreciation at the wonderful services being provided by the hospital to patients from his nation.

Dr SM Balaji and the delegation held extensive talks regarding further strengthening of ties between the hospital and the island nation. The minister expressed his satisfaction at the successful visit to the hospital

Invitation extended to Dr SM Balaji to visit the UCSF Dental School

Dr SM Balaji was invited as a special guest to visit the school by Dr Ophir Klein who is the Program Director of the “UCSF Program in Craniofacial Biology” during his recent trip to the country. This was in recognition of his research into newer surgical techniques to obtain better surgical results with less number of surgeries and a shorter convalescence period.

A warm welcome at the UCSF Dental School

Dr. SM Balaji met with Dr Ray Stewart who is the chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry. He presented Dr Ray Stewart him with his “Textbook of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery” and “Clinical Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery” book. Dr Stewart expressed how the books would be a valuable addition to the school’s library

These books have been authored by Dr SM Balaji. The former is a textbook for undergraduate and post graduate students in dentistry while the latter charts the milestone surgeries in his career as a Cranio-Maxillofacial surgeon.

Research into aspects of Craniofacial Biology at the Dental School

He later visited the UCSF’s landmark Division of Craniofacial anomalies and met with Dr Alice Goodwin, a leading researcher in Orthodontics in the “Program in Craniofacial Biology.” They held discussions regarding the direction of research in craniofacial biology and its role in benefitting prevention and early intervention in cases of craniofacial deformities.

Further discussions regarding treatment modalities

Dr. SM Balaji also visited Dr Snehlata Oberoi, Director, Cleft and Craniofacial Orthodontic Program at the school. They spoke at length about the incidence of craniofacial abnormalities in both their nations and the research being undertaken to help advance treatment options for patients.

Dr SM Balaji invites Dr Vitomir Konstantinovic to his hospital

Dr Vitomir Konstantinovic, Professor and Chair, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University of Belgrade, Serbia was invited by Dr SM Balaji to visit his hospital during a visit to Chennai recently. Dr Konstantinovic, who is also the director of the Serbian Dental Chamber, was in Chennai as a part of a lecture tour.

A guided tour of the hospital facilities

Dr Konstantinovic was taken on a guided tour of the hospital by Dr SM Balaji. He met a patient with hemifacial microsomia. Dr SM Balaji explained the treatment plan to Dr Konstantinovic. He was also introduced to Dr Prashanti Ugandhar, Head, Department of Prosthodontics at the hospital. They had a discussion of the latest prosthodontic technology available at the hospital. It was explained to him that all the prosthodontic work in the hospital was fabricated at the state of art laboratory present in the hospital.

Ward rounds with Dr SM Balaji

Dr Konstantinovic later accompanied Dr SM Balaji on ward rounds and interacted with patients on the surgical floor of the hospital. The various surgical treatments offered at the hospital were explained to him and the technology that was available for rehabilitation of patients. It was explained to him that our hospital is a premium center for facial cosmetic surgery in India.

Dr Konstantinovic expressed his appreciation over the hospital visit to Dr SM Balaji. He said that the facilities available at the hospital including the level of disinfection and asepsis were on par with the best of facilities seen by him.

International College of Dentists Conference in Hyderabad

The International College of Dentists (ICD), Section VI – India, Nepal and Sri Lanka held its Conference, Annual Convocation and Awards Function at the Marriott in Hyderabad, India. Dr Bettie McKaig, President, ICD International, Dr OP Kharbanda, President, ICD Section VI and Dr Rajiv Chugh, Secretary General, ICD Section VI were present at the conference along with fellows of ICD Section VI and other luminaries in the field of dentistry.

The conference had a pre-conference workshop that was well attended by both students and practitioners alike. This was conducted by many international as well as national delegates.

Honour for Dr SM Balaji

Dr SM Balaji, a renowned Chennai-based Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgeon and Fellow, International College of Dentists, was honored at this year’s conference for his contributions towards the rehabilitation of children afflicted with craniofacial deformities. His services to humanity were lauded by the ICD Section VI.

Student delegates from Bangladesh met with Dr SM Balaji and interacted with him at the conference. He answered all their queries related to career development and how to balance their social responsibilities and their dental career. The students expressed their thankfulness and appreciation to him for having provided them with sound advice.

Dr SM Balaji delivered the keynote lecture at the conference. The topic of his lecture was Rhinoplasty Surgery – Correction of Nasal Deformities. He presented many cases from his more than 25 years experience as a rhinoplasty specialist and explained the nuances of nasal deformity correction. His lecture was widely appreciated by the audience. The lecture was followed by a lively question and answer session with the audience.

Prof SM Balaji, an eminent Chennai-based Oral and Craniofacial Surgeon attended the 13th World Cleft Lip and Palate Congress held in Nagoya, Japan. This was held in conjunction with the 59th Congress of the World Teratology Society.

He is amongst the earliest members of the board of the ICPF. As one of the leading Cleft Lip and Palate Surgeons in the world, he was requested by the Board of the ICPF to toast the over 500 delegates from 79 countries who were in attendance at the congress. He delivered it in his usual style, peppered with his trademark humor with an underlying message to serve humanity.
